PARKROYAL Kuala LumpurMerdeka Square
Dataran Merdeka occupies a very significant place in Malaysian history. At the peak of its popularity in colonial times, it was a central gathering point for the British; it was also a cricket green. Previously, it was known as the Selangor Club Padang. Like many historic sites around the country, the structures around Dataran Merdeka bear traces of its past, and especially the colonial presence. Selangor Club is located at one corner of the square, and was formerly a social gathering place for British residents. Its Tudor-style architecture is interesting and adds character to the square. Close by is the neo-Gothic church of St Mary's Cathedral, which is more than 100 years old. |
