Top Places To Eat, Shop, and Play Like a Local in Kuala Lumpur

Sick of touristy spots in KL? Get the real deal here.

Do you know that the name Kuala Lumpur (KL) literally means “muddy confluence”?

Located near the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers, Malaysia’s capital city was named after the riverine intersection which can still be seen and photographed behind the historic Merdeka Square.

Today, the vibrant Asian city bears little resemblance to its name. Instead, KL is a colourful mash-up of tradition and modernity, exciting for shopaholics, foodies and party-goers alike.

When in KL, make like a KL-ite: eat, shop, and paint the town red. Here are some of PARKROYAL Kuala Lumpur’s recommendations on places you can visit to do just that.

Get Seriously Roti Canai-ed at Mansion Tea Stall

Address: No. 2, Ground Floor, Selangor Mansion, Jalan Masjid India, 50100 Kuala Lumpur
Opening hours: 24 hours daily

A trip to Malaysia’s capital city would not be complete without at least one meal of roti canai. If you only have time for one meal of this famous Indian-style flatbread (roti), you need to sample the Roti Canai Banjir Special served at Mansion Tea Stall.

Here, your ubiquitous Malaysian breakfast is uniquely prepared. It begins with shredding the roti into pieces, topping it with two half-boiled eggs, and drowning the entire plate with curry and sambal. It’s no surprise then that banjir means flood in Malay.

To savour the dish fully, you have to mix the lot thoroughly, ensuring that the eggs are well blended with the curry. The medley of flavours bursting on your palate could be your most gastronomic experience yet.

Chase it all down with a sip of bubbly teh tarik, a popular local drink of milk tea, “tarik-ed” or “pulled” to perfection.

In the mood for succulent seafood or just plain bouncy fishballs? B & Best Restaurant whips up the meanest and freshest bowl of seafood noodles in town. You can select your favourite seafood main; will it be pomfret, garoupa, red snapper, or shellfish today?

The sambal belachan (a popular Malaysian sauce made with chilli, prawn paste, and lime) served here promises to take the heat up several notches so you’ve been warned.

Satisfy your street food craving at Alor Street Food Night Market

Address: Jalan Alor, Bukit Bintang, 50200 Kuala Lumpur
Opening hours: 5:00pm to late

Less than 10 minutes away from PARKROYAL Kuala Lumpur lies Jalan Alor, one of KL’s most tantalising “eat streets”. Walking down the street is an experience in itself. This is where locals and tourists alike go after a night of clubbing or when they’re craving for cheap and authentic hawker food. A night market like this can only be described in one word: eclectic.

To maximise the variety of Kuala Lumpur food available here, arm yourself with a large appetite and a couple of foodie-buddies. Topping our must-try list are the handmade dim sum, lok lok (skewered meat, seafood, and vegetables that can be boiled in soup or deep-fried), grilled chicken wings, satay (a skewered and grilled meat dish, served with peanut sauce), and oyster omelette.

Go bargain hunting at Petaling Street Chinatown

Address: Jalan Petaling, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur
Opening hours: 10.00am to 9:30pm

Bargain hunters, get ready to whittle some prices down. Petaling Street is one of the most happening shopping and night markets in KL, with stalls peddling colourful wares from handbags and T-shirts to souvenirs and shoes. Prices may be initially quoted around 20 to 30 per cent higher than their real going value, so bargaining is a must. Do compare prices between similar stores while picking your favourite lookalike branded goods, local souvenirs or unique antiques.

Opening hours: 10:00am to 10:00pm

Chic and hip Malaysian consumer culture is fully embraced here at Pavilion, one of the glitziest malls in KL. Shop for your favourite international brands as KL’s urbanistas congregate in its sprawling complex, and have your kopi (Malaysian coffee with milk and sugar) or cappuccino while you’re at it. It is also the perfect spot to take a breather from the sweltering heat, and people-watch from the vantage point of a nice chill-out bar like Tom, Dick, and Harry’s.

Geeks Unite at Plaza Low Yat

Address: 7, Jalan Bintang, Bukit Bintang, 55100 Kuala Lumpur
Phone number: +60 3 2148 3651
Opening hours: 10:00am to 10:00pm

If you can’t go several days without your gadget fix, Plaza Low Yat is the place for you. Located just a 10-minute walk from PARKROYAL Kuala Lumpur, Low Yat is affectionately known as a gadget heaven or IT temple, whichever your inclination may be. For the uninitiated, however, it can also be fraud haven, so it’s best to do your research online first to know the price range of the items you want to buy.

Pro-tip: Never settle for the first deal. And when unsure, check out the larger IT stores on the third floor first.

It’s Finally Tipple Time, Enter No Black Tie

Address: 17, Jalan Mesui (off Jalan Nagasari), 50200 Kuala Lumpur
Phone number: +603 2142 3737
Opening hours: Dinner concert served at 7:00pm, live music from 9:00pm

No Black Tie, or NBT as it’s affectionately known by KL-ites, is KL’s go-to jazz establishment. Hidden away in a dodgy-looking lane with just a small sign outside as a marker, you’d think that you were visiting a modern-day speakeasy as you step into the bar’s cosy and dim-lit interiors and order a cocktail with an interesting name.

But there’s nothing prohibitive about this place. NBT has hosted some of the most talented acts from Malaysia and overseas, and is one of KL’s choicest watering holes, particularly for jazz aficionados. Check out their show schedule before visiting, and prepare yourself for a soulful night out.
