Pongal Festival

Ponggol festival is known as Tamil harvest festival celebrated by Hindu communities. Celebrated over the period of four days, it is a thanksgiving festival dedicated nature. The word Ponggol means boiling over and it actually refers to the ritual of boiling of rice in a new pot until it boils over. This act of ritual is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the household. In temples, devotees will be chanting prayers and with tunes bells, drums and clarinets herald the joyous celebration. Vegetables, sugar cane and spices are offered to the Gods and later consumed by devotees to cleanse their sins.

Thaipusam

Thaipusam is celebrated among the Hindu community every year on the full moon of Tamil Month of Thai (which is the January and February period). The word Thaipusam is derived from the name of the month, Thai, and that of a star, Pusam. This celebration marks the celebration of good over evil, where devotees seek blessings and offer thanks by carrying Kavadis or milk pots from Little India to the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani temple atop the hill of Jalan Kebun Bunga.
