Malay for ‘palace’, the Istana is a large compound situated amongst the hustle and bustle of Singapore’s favourite shopping street, Orchard Road. This important state building is the place where the Singapore President receives guests and hosts events and home to Singapore’s Prime Minister’s offices.
The building and its grounds are only open to the public on designated statutory holidays, including Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Singapore National Day.
If these open days do not fall within your stay and you’d still like to see some serious Singapore state business in action, make sure you see the Changing of the Guard Parade which takes place on the first Sunday of every month.
Istana Park, Singapore
Right across the road from the Istana, you’ll find the luscious Istana Park. Spanning 13,000 square metres, this green space serves as an extension of the Istana’s main entrance. With a 26 metre-long, six metre-high Festival Arch that rises out of a shallow reflecting pool, it forms the gateway to Singapore’s cultural and historical heart.
Home to more than 150 species of plants sourced from South East Asia and beyond, Istana Park is a tropical oasis that provides much-needed relief after a busy day’s shopping on Orchard Road.
